Program Linking on the ASIP Server

[Advanced]

Program linking allows applications to send Apple Events to other applications, either locally (on the same computer), or to applications across a network. To enable program linking, there are 3 steps, which helps provide security for its use:

  • Enable Program Linking for the Server

First, program linking must be enabled for the whole machine. This is done in the File Sharing control panel by clicking "Start" (Button changes to "Stop").

  • Enable Program Linking for the User

Second, program linking must be enabled for each user that needs to use it. This allows you to give access only to users you know have a need for it. This is done by opening the user in the Users & Groups list, and checking the box that allows program linking.

  • Enable Program Linking for the Application

Third, the application that will be linked to--such as Hypercard--must be enabled for program linking. This is done by selecting the application in the Finder, and selecting "Sharing…" from the File menu.

Warning: the Finder application itself does not need to be enabled in this way. If program linking is turned on in File Sharing, any user who also has program linking enabled could (conceivably) use AppleScript to send messages to the Finder of the server. They could tell the Finder to quit applications, delete files, copy files, shut down, etc.
